Connected Intelligence: Network Learning Projects
All digital content produced by the CITD Trainers, Associate Teachers and students of the Madeiran school system resides on the Ministry of Education website. From February 1999 through 2001, 8 different CI NLPs have been developed...
1. EthnoMadeira: This project focused on the development of on-line local Madeiran cultural content. It was also the basis for the creation of an extremely successful fashion show that took place at Showcase 2000 in which students created and modeled their own clothing with the mentorship of a local fashion designer.
2. The Gardens of Atlantis: This project focused on the development of on-line local Madeiran tourism content. It had an important alliance with AniMadeira (a service provider of orienteering for the Madeiran school system). An important direction of this project was to merge the biological diversity of Madeira with tourism.
3. Virtual Plaza: This project originally focused on the development of a virtual simulation of the downtown square in Funchal. It used a 3D simulation package called “VizSim” that was taught by virtual reality expert Ben Delaney of California USA. The project evolved into Urban Life and extended the original concept in the direction of urban renewal.
4. Oceans: This project focused on the spirit, mythology and science of the Atlantic Ocean. This is a topic unique to the Madeiran sensibility since there history and lifestyle are literally surrounded by the Atlantic.
5. Virtual Lab: This project focused on the development of on-line materials for use in the instructional delivery of science. It had a unique focus on the issue of how to involve and motivate female students in science more effectively.
6. Education for Tomorrow: This project, currently under development, is focused on developing a vision for what education will be like in the future.
7. The Future of Work: This project, currently under development, is focused on developing a web portal that provides students and others with information about the workplace of tomorrow.
8. Communications for Tomorrow: This project, currently under development, is focused on developing web content for what communications will be like in the future.
